Vacuum Cleaners
Article by Jeevan More

The very first motorized vacuum cleaner was invented in year 1901 by Hubert Cecil Booth.
In 1910 P.A. Fisker patented a
vacuum cleaner using a name based on the company’s telegram address—Nilfisk.
It was the first electric vacuum cleaner in Europe. His design weighed
just 17.5 kg and could be operated by a single person. The company
Fisker and Nielsen was formed just a few years before. Today the Nilfisk
vacuums are delivered by
Nilfisk-Advance
and are considered amongst the best vacuum cleaners.
Now a days Vacuum cleaners are found in different variants
designed to meet needs in various sectors. There are household
vacuum cleaners, professional vacuum cleaners, industrial vacuum
cleaners, dry vacuum cleaners, wet dry vacuum cleaners, upright vacuum
cleaners, backpack vacuum cleaners, continuous duty vacuum cleaners,
stationary vacuum cleaners, portable vacuum cleaners, light duty vacuum
cleaners, heavy duty vacuum cleaners. Whatever type of vacuum cleaner it
may be but the technology with which it runs remains same.
Technology : A vacuum's suction is caused by a difference in air pressure. An electric fan reduces the pressure inside the machine. Atmospheric pressure then pushes the air through the carpet and into the nozzle, and so the dust is literally pushed into the bag.
In industrial and commercial sectors vacuum cleaners are basically divided into the following types :-
-
Dry Vacuum Cleaner
-
Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner
-
Backpack Vacuum Cleaner
-
Upright Vacuum Cleaner
-
Continuous Duty Vacuum Cleaner
Dry portable vacuum cleaners meet the needs of collecting dry dust from hard floors. It is compact, small in size with 6 to 10 ltrs dust capacity and comes with accessories for various applications.
Wet and Dry vacuum cleaner is used for collection of dry dust as well as spillages of water or liquid. Best wet and dry vacuum cleaners can lift large amount of water, oil and other viscous fluids from the floors. Many of these vacuum cleaner are used in combination with single disc floor scrubber to suck grease, oil and other stains that are previous dislodged by scrubbing action of Floor scrubber.
Backpack vacuum cleaner can be mounted onto ones back or hip. They are extremely light weight with a long electric cable (at least 25 meters). These backpack vacuum cleaners are generally dry vacuum cleaners and fit for applications in shopping mall, multiplexes, aircraft cleaning and cinema hall.
Upright vacuum cleaner are generally meant for sucking dry dust from carpets. Carpets quickly get dusty due to people's continuous movement over it, the dust or sand carried by their shoes settle deep into the piles of the carpets over a period of time. Upright vacuum cleaner consist of a cylindrical brush that combs the carpet, loosens the dust and brings all the dust from the bottom of the pies to the top which is immediately sucked and collected in the container.
Continuous duty vacuum cleaner are meant for extraction of dust for long hours of working. Generally any vacuum cleaner with brush motor run on intermittent duties (i.e. from 30 minutes to 4 hrs at a stretch depending upon the ambient). In countries like India where ambient generally vary between 25 and 45 degree Celsius there vacuum cleaner with brush motor could run for maximum 30 to 45 minutes. Other wise if the usage is for long hours then continuous duty vacuum cleaner or turbine vacuum cleaner or side channel blower vacuum cleaner are generally considered.
Cost of Vacuum Cleaner depends accordingly. Vacuum cleaner cost may vary with the type, and quality of its build. Generally the cheapest vacuum cleaner are dry vacuum cleaners that are used for household as well as hotels or hospitals. Vacuum cleaner with brush motors are generally preferred by buyers due to its compact design and cheaper cost as compared to the turbine or side channel blower type vacuum cleaners.
